May 9 Miriam College, Quezon City Continuing Professional Development for Reading Education

May 16 Pinkies Corner Restaurant, Zamora Gomez Streets, Dagupan City Helping Struggling Readers through Targeted Testing and Teaching
-Php 1,000 for private school teachers, non-RAP
 -Php 800 for public school teachers, students, RAP  members
Elections for the next set of RAP board members shall take place during the May 9 forum at Miriam College.

RAP and IBB bring books to Leyte Province

RAP went to Tacloban and Leyte in Leyte Province  last January 26 and 27 to facilitate the distribution of boxes of brand new books to public schools whose libraries were destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan. The books came from the International Book Bank (IBB) based in the US. The following schools received boxes of books to help rebuild their library collections: Panalaron Central School, Don Vicente Quintero Memorial School, Marasbaras Elementary School, Burauen National High School, Cagangon Elementary School, Camansihay Elementary School, Catagbacan Elementary School, Abuyogon Elementary School, Villa Corazon Elementary School, Dinaayan Elementary School, Tagadtaran Elementary School, Matin-ao Elementary School, San Fernando Primary School, San Roque Elementary School, Marasbaras National High School, Lorenzo Daa Memorial School, Antonio Balmes National School, Manlurip Elementary School, Tanauan 1 Central School, Tanauan 2 Central School, and Bulod Elementary Schools.More than x books were distributed across these schools.

This activity brought immeasurable joy to the teachers and to the children as they eagerly opened the boxes of books and read them immediately.

RAP Teacher Training in Pasay

Last November 29, 2014 at the Department of Education Division Office in Pasay, the Reading Association of the Philippines in partnership with Rotary Club Pasay West and literacy coach Victoria Lagoutte, held a workshop  for public school teachers from Pasay.  The workshop was dubbed as, “Training of Grade 2 Teachers on Literacy Enhancement Program (Read Aloud Project).” The workshop was facilitated by Victoria Lagoutte of the American School in Paris, who was ably assisted by RAP Board members Fe Novilunio, Heidi Macahilig and Remedios Nanawa. Also present to help RAP was Daisy Calado of Readabiity Clinis.

The purpose of the workshop was to train the teachers on how to use Read Aloud as a strategy to enhance literacy learning in their classrooms and help their students be efficient and effective readers.
The workshop was participated by 175 principals and grade 2 teachers. A follow-up training is expected to be held in May 2015.

Demofest Invitation

Dear Literacy Advocates, Administrators and Teachers,

Greetings from the Reading Association of the Philippines (RAP)!

We would like to invite you to attend our annual RAP Demofest this coming October 2-4, 2014 in Cebu City.  This year’s demonstration festival is on the theme: Understanding Reading Difficulties in the Era of Standards.

All plenary and demonstration lessons featured in this Demofest shall focus on the following themes:

  1. Reading Assessment Strategies for the Classroom Teacher
  2. Reading Intervention across the Various Strands of Literacy
    for Struggling Readers
  3. Teacher Preparation and Development for Effective Reading Instruction

The registration fee is P4,500. Those who register before September 15 will enjoy a discounted rate of P4,000.
